Is Cabarete, Dominican Republic Safe?

Is Cabarete, Dominican Republic Safe?

If you’ve never been to Cabarete, it’s fair to wonder if it’s safe to vacation in our small tropical town. The quick answer is yes! You’ll love Cabarete for its intimate vibe, friendly locals, and beautiful beaches

However, like in all parts of the world, there are a couple of things you need to be aware of to stay safe and have fun. So, we put together a list of safety tips that can come in handy while you explore the adventure capital of the Caribbean. Cheers!

Don’t Walk by Yourself at Night in Poorly Lit Areas

Always use common sense. It’s best to stay clear of unlit areas at night, especially if you’re walking alone. Our downtown Cabarete location is one of the safest places in town, but it’s best to stay conscious of your surroundings.

The same applies to the beaches at night. This doesn’t mean that you’ll never get to see how gorgeous Cabarete Beach looks at night, though! Just head to one of our favourite beachfront bars or a beachside seafood restaurant La Casita de Papi, to safely enjoy what Cabarete has to offer.

Don’t Flash Your Cash

Showing off money or expensive possessions in public places can make you a target. Robberies are not common in Cabarete but flashing your valuables exposes you to unnecessary risk. Leave expensive jewelry and electronics at home and don’t carry large amounts of cash on you. It just means you’ll spend less $ shopping in Cabarete’s gift stores!

Pay Attention to Rip Currents

When people ask, “Is Cabarete, Dominican Republic safe?” they usually want to know about crime rates. Crime levels in Cabarete are low, but rip currents are a natural danger that not many tourists know about.

Rip currents are strong flows of water that can appear near the beach. These currents move very fast away from the shore and can take you with them even if you’re a strong swimmer. You can spot rip tides by flat spots in the line of breaking waves.

If you get caught in a rip current, stay calm and don’t fight it because it will only make you tired. Float, call and wave for help, and try to swim out of the current parallel to the shore. At least it will be a story to tell!

Learn Some Spanish

Learning a couple of (Dominican) Spanish sentences can go a long way. Many locals, especially those who work in tourism, speak English, but knowing even a little Spanish can earn you extra respect and a couple of personal favors. It can also help you if you get lost and need to ask for directions.

Listen to Your Gut

This sentiment is true everywhere, but acknowledge what your body is telling you. If you feel unsafe or think that the situation is getting sketchy, leave. Better safe than sorry!
