What Is Moringa?

Alexander the Great was undefeated in India until he had to fight with the Mauryan warriors, who relied heavily on moringa in their diets. Can you guess what happened? Yup, he lost. #MoringaPower. Source: Greece Is.

Moringa, or Moringa oleifera, also called The Miracle Tree, is a little known plant that grows in abundance in the Dominican Republic. You may not have heard as much about moringa as you have about matcha and kale. Still, it definitely deserves the superfood title. It’s been used in medicine for thousands of years. In fact, the first mentions of moringa can be traced back to 2000 BCE (!), when it was used to treat over 300 (!!!) diseases, from skin blemishes to tuberculosis, in what is now known as India. It’s no wonder that in many African languages, moringa is called “Nebedaye,” which means “never die”!

From its native India, Moringa spread to Asia, Africa, and Latin America. It is used to make beauty products, combat malnutrition in developing countries, and purify water. Yes, moringa can do it all!

This resistant tree grows in dry and sandy soils. It is incredibly resilient and can thrive in low-quality land where other plants can’t survive. In other words, it’s a fighter! We have personally heard a story about sprouted moringa seeds ripping through a napkin.

Health Benefits of Moringa

So, what is it that makes moringa into a “miracle tree”? The plant can be used to treat a long list of health conditions, from acne (and macne!) to cancer. Yes, we know, it sounds like #FakeNews. But multiple studies claim that moringa can reduce inflammation, protect your heart, and help manage obesity and type 2 diabetes

What makes moringa so powerful? It contains over 90 nutrients and boasts of a unique combination of 46 antioxidants that boost its healing abilities. Quite impressive for a plant, huh? According to the USDA, 100 grams of moringa leaves contain more Vitamin C than oranges, more iron with spinach, more calcium than cow’s milk, and more Vitamin A than carrots. Moringa also has a surprisingly large amount of protein and contains all essential amino acids, which is extremely rare for a plant. It’s basically a multivitamin Mama Nature made just for you.

Where to Find Moringa in Cabarete? Meet Moringaia!

Beautiful view from Moringaia’s farm.

So now you want moringa. Where do you get some? We got you covered! Cabarete is home to a fantastic company that makes all kinds of moringa products, from soaps to teas, called Moringaia. So no, you won’t need to find a random moringa tree and use its leaves to make a salad.

Moringaia was created in 2012 by Ben-Yam, a local plant-guru. During his travels to the most drought-stricken parts of the Dominican Republic, he was fascinated by the resilience of moringa trees that grew there in abundance. But despite their impressive health benefits, the trees were growing like weeds and had no real value. Ben-Yam knew that this had to change. He started buying the seeds from the locals, and this is how Moringaia was born. Now, the company works with several villages on the border with Haiti, and the trees, previously useless, support vulnerable local populations. In Moringaia’s own words, they are “a mission with a brand, not a brand with a mission.”

Moringaia makes clean beauty products, powders, and teas using only natural ingredients that you can pronounce. In fact, they grow lots of them on their farm! It’s only a quick 5-10-minute drive from Cabarete Palm Beach Condos and is open to visitors. If you want to spend an afternoon in a plant sanctuary with a breathtaking view, reach out so we can put you in contact with the owner.

What to Do with Moringa Powder

After your trip to Moringaia, you’re guaranteed to come back with your hands full of soaps and scrubs. Welcome to the Tea Tree Detox Face Serum Fan Club! We are only a little bit kidding when we say that we can’t live without it anymore.

It’s pretty self-explanatory how to use soap, but what do you do with the moringa powder? Eat it plain? No way!

Each suite in Cabarete Palm Beach Condos comes with a fully equipped kitchen (kitchenettes in studios), so there is no need to torture your taste buds. Here are our favorite ways to use moringa powder:

  • Add it to a smoothie for an extra protein boost,
  • Mix it with salads for a unique flavor kick,
  • Sprinkle it on baked goods, like banana or zucchini bread,
  • Use it in soups or chilis if you’ve been craving something different.

Our special trick is to mix it with guacamole to make it look even greener! And the best place to get Mexican food in Cabarete is, of course, Gorditos Fresh. Their Mambo Fish Tacos are a part of our beauty routine, too.
