Maitai Cabarete Freestyle Invitational 2016
Event information and dates
Cabarete, the water sports mecca of the Caribbean, attracts thousands of individuals from all over the globe to enjoy its perfect conditions. With over 300 days of kiteable wind per year; it’s no wonder Cabarete caught the eye of the KRU (Kiteboarding Riders Untied), which will be holding one of the World Kiteboarding League events here on our doorstep!
The World Kiteboarding League brings together the worlds best kiteboarding athletes to compete for the ultimate Freestyle World Title. It also offers the opportunity for locals to compete in trials before the main event. The winners of these trials then get to compete against the big guns. The competition is an incredible opportunity for local talent here in Cabarete to be seen and to impress existing or potential sponsors without having to worry about the expense of traveling. The tour has many stops around the globe including Germany, Spain, Morocco, and even New Caledonia! The top 24 men and 12 women will be competing for the podium in a brand new competition format. This format was designed to make the heats easier and clearer for spectators to watch and understand.
The last time the World Kiteboarding event visited here was 2010! Since then, Cabarete has hosted many remarkable competitions such as the renowned Master Of The Ocean Event, the Caribbean Laser Regatta Sailing Event, countless surf events and various windsurfing competitions. No doubt, the World Kiteboarding League will be another brilliant tournament added to the Cabarete repertoire, especially as the Mai Tai and Butterfly Effect events also overlap!
The Maitai Cabarete Freestyle Invitational runs from 12th – 17th of July and will take place on Cabarete Beach in front of the LEK Kite School. You will be able to keep up to date with the status of the competitions on the World Kiteboarding League Facebook page. So come on down and support our local talent and don’t forget to tell us who you think will take home the top prize in the comments.
