Cabarete Eats: Gordito’s Fresh Mex
Find out more about Gordito’s Fresh Mex, their menu and opening times
If you were to ask anyone in Cabarete where to grab a bite to eat, they would more than likely answer Gordito’s Fresh Mex. The concept of a quick-service Mexican style restaurant serving up burritos, tacos, and bowls is nothing new, but Gordito’s has a style all their own and that has earned them a very devout following.
Let’s start with the food, because that is really why we are all here reading this post. As the name implies, everything that is put on your plate is made in house with fresh ingredients. Although the menu is pretty simple, the flavors are robust and the servings are hearty. The most popular menu item is the Mambo Fish Tacos (fish caught locally daily), but there is also the expected dose of beef, pork, chicken, and veggies. To wash it all down, and perhaps to put out the fire from their optional super spicy sauce, are margaritas, homemade sangria, and ice-cold beer.
Now, let’s talk about the service. It’s frankly the best service you will get anywhere…and by anywhere, we mean like anywhere in the whole wide world. First of all, the counter service set up makes putting an order together lightning fast. Most of the time, even in low season, there is a line out the door. Even so, getting all the way through the line, from order to paying, MIGHT take you 7.2 minutes or so…on a bad day. On a normal day, especially if you live in Cabarete, your order might be waiting for you before you even walk through the door! Ok, not really, but if you are a regular you best believe whoever is working the order station knows what you like, how you like it, and they aren’t afraid to admit it and whip it up with a big ole smile.
The secret salsa (pun intended) to all of this success? Really happy employees. How do you get really happy employees? You take care of them. How do you take care of them? You are one of them, so you understand them. It’s a very well known fact around town that Deidra and Joe (the owners) are workaholics and 99% of the time when you dine at Gordito’s you will see one or both of them slinging tacos just like the rest of the team. It’s also a very well known fact that Deidra and Joe are very big supporters of the community in general. They sponsor just about every event that comes through town. They also take care of a few local athletes by providing them with food. And at the end of the workday, when it’s almost time to close up shop, you might notice a few local kids standing around the parking lot. They are just waiting for Deidra or Joe to bring them out a complimentary plate before getting in the car and calling it a night.
